A bit of history...
Started in 1996, the Coop is a community supported biodynamic agriculture project in Forest Row, East Sussex, some 30 miles south of London. The project includes Tablehurst Farm and Plaw Hatch Farm. Both farms are owned by the local community through the Coop and both sell almost all of their produce through the Tablehurst and Plaw Hatch farm shops. In addition to the farm produce which includes raw milk, award winning cheeses, excellent quality organic meat and poultry from heritage breeds, freshly picked vegetables, salad packs and fruit, the farm shops have grown to also sell a wide range of organic and biodynamic products from other, mainly local, producers so that many customers are now finding that all their food shopping can be done in the farms.
Both farms manage their land using a system of organic agriculture known as biodynamics. A biodynamic farm functions as a strong, self-sustaining and vibrant organism recognising and respecting the basic principles at work in Nature. In the biodynamic system all the different components of the farm are seen as parts of a greater whole. With farm animals at the centre, a self-contained, balanced, harmonious environment is the result.
